Our thoughts. Several life times could require several realities hence the theory of the multiverse could be apt and likely to be very necessary in spiritual development. Our thought/idea takes the multiverse theory and applies reincarnation. We think or consider the multiverse to be necessary that contains a hugely vast network of universes where planets are connected. Imagine spirits/souls traveling from one planet/reality to the next.
